> ZICO ‘Step(s) Up’ for a run with a just cause

RM10,000 contributed to local charity

20 of Zaid Ibrahim & Co’s (ZICO) Partners and staff took part in the recent KL Marathon 2010 with more than just health as an incentive. ZICO, Malaysia’s largest and a leading regional law firm, made the decision to do more than just get involved and turned it into an opportunity to do something meaningful. Partners, associates and staff were encouraged to participate and sweat it out for a good cause.

For every ZICO runner that completed the KL Marathon within the given time period, the law firm pledged to donate RM500 to a selected charity. The initiative, aptly named Step Up, saw 20 ZICO Runnerbees impelled to speed through to the KL Marathon finish. With their efforts, a total of RM10,000 was raised for ZICO’s choice of charity, Rumah Amal Limpahan Kasih (RALK) in Puchong.

“We strive to be good corporate citizens by actively supporting the local communities within which we work. We have a strong commitment to aiding charities and initiatives which independently make every effort to set a good example. This philosophy is exactly why we chose to assist Rumah Amal Limpahan Kasih,” shared Dato’ Dr Nik Norzrul Thani, Chairman and Senior Partner of Zaid Ibrahim & Co.

“Charities such as Rumah Amal Limpahan Kasih set wonderful and motivating examples for children through the practice of various activities that generate income to help sustain the charity. We looked around to determine the most suitable charity to support and were inspired by RALK’s approach to providing for the children it cares for. Here, the children are led to nurture a garden and sell plants which they have grown themselves to the community. The charity runs a restaurant to provide further financial support for the home. ” added Dato’ Dr Nik.

Recently, some 40 ZICO personnel, including the firm’s Chairman & Senior Partner, Dato’ Dr Nik Norzrul Thani and Managing Partner, Mr. Chew Seng Kok, visited RALK to personally deliver the various items purchased for the home using the RM10,000. The home, which cares for boys and girls of primary and secondary school ages, had provided a wish list of things the home greatly needed. Amongst some of ZICO’s gifts were a new range of books, several computers and 20 brand new bicycles. A team of volunteers even spruced up the home’s library by a organizing it to also include a wide selection of new educational and fictional reading material. During the visit, the children of RALK enjoyed various interactive games with ZICO staff and were treated to a magic show and novelty lunch courtesy of McDonalds.

“We want to encourage these children to make something of themselves through enhancing their education. By expanding their library we are promoting literacy. By providing them with additional computers and guiding them on how to function these computers, we are providing these kids with basic skills which, these days, are essential if they are to excel,” stated Mr. Chew Seng Kok

“It was truly a touching moment to see the childrens’ faces light up as they played with our staff and to listen to them laugh at the magician’s tricks. It’s very moving to know that we have impacted their lives in a positive way. We’re very proud of the effort our runners put into the KL Marathon. Many of us are here today and to be able to see how we have contributed to these children is extremely rewarding,” expressed Ariff Rozhan, who co-led the Runnerbees at the KL Marathon 2010.

> Malaysian Law firm launches publication on “Demystifying Islamic Finance” in Australia

Australia’s Assistant Treasurer Senator Nick Sherry today launched a book published by Zaid Ibrahim & Co (ZICO) entitled “Demystifying Islamic Finance – Correcting Misconceptions, Advancing Value Propositions”.

Guests from the financial services sector, the legal fraternity and the media, witnessed the ceremony of the book launch together with Dato’ Dr Nik Norzrul Thani, Chairman of ZICO; Mr Nik Mohamed Din Nik Musa, Deputy Director of Malaysia International Islamic Financial Centre (MIFC) Promotion Unit; Mr Madzlan Hussain, Partner of Zaid Ibrahim & Co and author of publication Demystifying Islamic Finance; Mr Lim Kar Han, Partner, Zaid Ibrahim & Co in charge of the firm’s Australian operations; Mr Kelvin Ng, Partner, Zaid Ibrahim & Co; Dr Aida Othman, Partner, Zaid Ibrahim & Co and Director of ZI Shariah Advisory Services; and Mr Paul Davies, Australian Representative for ZI Shariah Advisory Services.

Demystifying Islamic Finance was conceptualised through ZICO’s research and experience in serving the Islamic finance industry. It will provide a useful overview of Islamic Finance, particularly to enlighten new markets who are interested in introducing Islamic Finance to their financial services sector, it will offer a basic understanding of issues related to Islamic finance and aims to dispel inaccurate and unfounded misconceptions.

The publication is intended to fill this knowledge gap, raise public awareness of Islamic finance and promote opportunities for Islamic finance generally. This 44-page publication addresses the misconceptions about the industry in a simple, candid and reader-friendly response to frequently asked questions on Islamic Finance. It is authored by Madzlan Hussain, a well-travelled practising Islamic finance lawyer with over 12 years of active engagement in the industry, especially during his tenure with the Islamic Financial Services Board. Madzlan was particularly responsible for overseeing the development of prudential framework for corporate governance practices for all segments of Islamic financial services.

Demystifying Islamic Finance identifies 15 most frequent misconceptions and 10 main value propositions of Islamic finance. It highlights, among other things, that Islamic finance is not a mere replica of conventional finance. It also negates the notion that Islamic finance is superior and immune from unethical practices. The publication emphasises that Islamic finance is practical for stakeholders who wish to add depth to their financial system; enhance diverse product offerings and widen their customer base.  In consequence to this, it shares the belief that the Islamic Finance opportunity will amplify avenues for investment and capital raising.

The publication is fully supported by the Malaysia International Islamic Financial Centre (MIFC), which was set up by the Central Bank of Malaysia to promote Malaysia as a major hub for international Islamic finance.
